School counselling and development programmes for the whole learning community
Support for students, educators and parents can include academic development, career awareness, social-emotional development, group counselling, assessment support and tailored institutional programmes.
Programs shaped around the institution
Audience, age group, participant count, topic priorities and duration can all be discussed before finalising a session.
Helping remove barriers to learning while supporting the whole student
Comprehensive developmental school counselling programs provide education, prevention and intervention services that are integrated into all aspects of children’s lives. Early identification and prevention of children’s academic, personal and social needs is essential in removing barriers to learning and promoting academic achievement. School counsellors align with the school’s mission to support the academic achievement of all students as they prepare for the ever-changing world of the 21st century.
Counselling lessons and responsive services
School counselling combines preventive education with timely support when academic, personal, family or social concerns begin to affect a student.
Counselling lessons
Counsellors teach classroom lessons designed for achievement of knowledge and skills in career, academic, personal and social development.
Responsive services
Counsellors work with students and families to help them deal with issues that may be interfering with academic success.
How students are referred
Three common referral routes
Academic, career, social and emotional development
Academic Development
Effective learning in school and across the lifespan; academic preparation for post-secondary options; and understanding the relationship of academics, work, family and community life.
Career Development
Investigating the world of work to make informed decisions, using strategies to achieve future career goals, and understanding the relationship between personal qualities, education and career choices.
Social & Emotional Development
Interpersonal skills to respect self and others; decision making, setting goals and taking action to achieve goals; and understanding everyday safety and survival skills.
Counselling groups
Counselling groups are available to students who share similar concerns or issues. Groups are led by the counsellor and can include four to ten students. They provide a supportive way to learn new skills, practise new behaviours and better understand how to deal with life’s problems. School groups may meet weekly for six to nine weeks during the school day.
